Occult

The word Occult, for many conjures up a vision of dark forces or participants in supernatural activity of a dubious nature. Where in reality the word Occult taken from the Latin word ‘Occultus’ simply means ‘hidden’ or ‘secret’. It also means a knowledge of the paranormal, esoteric ritual and words of power. Because many dark magic practices were often carried out in secret, the word Occult came to define this type of activity. But, in truth it represents so much more then that. Many spiritual principles come under the ‘umbrella’ term of the word occult.

While many of these principals are still kept under a cloak of mystery, the true nature of it’s roots, lies in paganism and nature based philosophies, which are now more well known, and thus, less frightening to the general public. Occult practices are ancient and modern as well. Many occult practices and occult power is passed from person to person, and these teachings are not widely available for public view, and so this tends to lend to the word occult, an aura of mystery. Over time there have been many secret or occult societies from the Rosicrucians to the Knights Templars and the Illuminati to name but a few.

Most occult practices are very spiritual, and stress do no harm to others! For instance Wicca, is a religion often associated with the occult, and it staunchly follows the Rule of Three, which basically states, that whatever you do to another will return to you three-fold. Many believe that because occultists rely on various occult symbols, tools and rituals that it must somehow be questionable. However, most, if not all, religions have their own form of symbols, rituals and tools that are used to aid the practice of the religion in question. Additionally, most religions have some secret or occult aspect that is not widely known or shared within the general public.

The reason for this, is that it is important that any aspirant who seriously wishes to rise in knowledge and power within their chosen path, should follow lengthy periods of training;  A preparation of the mind, body and spirit. It is understood and taken very seriously, that knowledge is a powerful thing;  that in the wrong hands, may be misused. That is why there is a strong emphasis on mental and spiritual strength; emotional and spiritual maturity, which may take years to achieve. As an individual develops, and grows into their spiritual path, knowledge is made available to them. But only when they are deemed ready to receive it. Hence why many aspects are kept hidden until the time is right for them to be revealed.

Occult symbols carry a substantial amount of occult power. But for maximum potency, they are usually combined with the energy and intent of the one who is practicing the ritual. The pentagram is one of the most powerful occult symbols known and has been used for thousands of years in the practice of the occult. The pentagram is simply a five pointed star that is drawn for various uses and has its roots in ancient Greece. Most believe that this occult symbol should be drawn with the topmost triangle pointing upwards towards the heavens in order to bring good forces into being. An inversed pentagram is considered very unlucky, and in some cases even evil. In occult practices the pentagram is usually depicted within a circle. The circle itself is an occult symbol and offers protection as in those drawn around the members of a coven or around an individual who is meditating or spell casting.

There are many examples of occult symbols to be seen in plain sight. To most people, triangles are simply three-sided symbols or objects that are found in a variety of every day applications, such as mathematics, engineering or surveying.  However, to occultists and others familiar with the occult arts, triangles have a deeper, spiritual meaning.  To the occult, triangles represent a merging of the spiritual and earthly realms and are considered symbolic or ‘spiritual triangles’. Even truncated triangles and truncated triangular shapes, such as a pyramid, have spiritual meaning to the occult. The Egyptians believed in orientating their temples to the stars; likewise, those who were responsible for designing the layout of the United States capital city, ensured that Washington, D.C. was laid out in accordance with those same pagan beliefs.  The particular star in relationship to the layout of Washington, D.C. is ‘Sirius’ – and interestingly, but not surprisingly, the Egyptian hieroglyphic for Sirius includes the triangular obelisk.

Occult symbolism is also used every day in advertising logo’s for some big companies. For example, Sony, Adidas, Mercedez Benz, Volkswagon, Renault and Citroen. Chrysler uses The Winged Sun Disc, representing the sun god Ra from Egyptian mythology. Which is  used by groups such as the Freemasons and Spiritists.  Also, famous musicians such as Kenye West and Lady Gaga  use them on their album covers and music video’s. Though both are extremely successful and popular artists, who can say how much impact using such powerful symbols may have had in that success. It is an interesting thought isn’t it!
