Flying dreams are extremely common. Whether you are flying in a flying machine, such as a passenger airplane, or flying under your own steam, like a bird in the sky. A flight in a plane enables the dreamer to gain an overview of the landscape (your life) ahead of them, and to prepare for obstacles or problems in the future.
Piloting a plane in your dream represents a need to fly high above our peers, or perhaps to excel and chase our aspirations. Flying in a passenger aircraft probably indicates a desire to travel, to leave behind the familiar and seek out exotic new places. It may also be a symptomatic of a need to leave behind the mundane ties of the earth, to sample the freedom of the skies; this is especially likely if you find yourself flying with friends. Solo flight is more likely to be a sign of ambition.
An important part of flying dreams, can also be the kind of landscape the dreamer flies over. Your reaction to the landscape, the feelings it evokes within you. Imaginative people may conjure up more scenic and fantastic landscapes then the more practical people. Cities symbolise the community, and the dreamers relationship with it. Misty indistinct buildings may indicate the dreamers lack of understanding of others; or express their lack of understanding or unease in personal relationships. A futuristic city is generally a sign of optimism and happiness: The dreamer looks towards a bright future with great hope and expectations. Visiting a strange city, may indicate that circumstances may force a house move.
Flying over rolling countryside, ordered fields, small villages and green hills, may be comforting to some, and claustrophobic to others. Agriculture is the lifeblood of the country, producing the foodstuffs so necessary to everyone. So dreams that incorporate an agricultural setting, may relate to the dreamers whole life and what they need for both physical and spiritual sustenance. The environment of a dream has a strong bearing on its atmosphere, and the weather, landscape and general surroundings are often critical factors in trying to unravel its meaning.
The time of year, and the background scenery reinforce the action of the dream. The weather or season may enhance the mood or completely alter what appears to be a familiar landscape. In medieval times, soothsayers and astrologers, used the four elements – fire, earth, water and air – to assign characteristics to people’s personalities and each element can assume different forms in dreams.
To dream you are flying without the aid of a vehicle of some kind is strongly connected to astral travel. To dream you are flying means you are out of the body, freed from physical limitations. If you can gain conscious control of the dream, you may direct your movement and travel to different locations in time-space. Sometimes people have a sense of someone flying alongside them on these astral journeys. Even if they cannot see who they are. It is universally acknowledged, that this ‘someone’ is probably a spirit guide. An evolved spiritual teacher, who is there to protect and guide you on your astral travels and to ensure that you accomplish what you hope to, while you are outside of your body.
People who regularly have these flying dreams, report feelings of excitement and exhilaration. A sense of freedom and lightness of spirit that they do not feel in their waking life. I believe this type of flying dream comes at a time when the individual really needs to know, that regardless of what their physical and emotional limitations are; within them lies the ability to rise up above their problems. From this higher vantage point, they can see more clearly what needs to be done; That within, they hold the key to liberate themselves.
